چکیده

FOLLOWING the establishment [Platt & Lu, 1939] of the occurrence of increased amounts of pyruvic acid in the body fluids of patients suffering from beri-beri and the studies of Lu [1939] on the effect of muscular activity on the blood pyruvate of the rabbit, it appeared desirable that an investigation should be made of the relationships between pyruvic acid accumulation in the blood, amount of exercise and nutrition with respect to vitamin B1; this has been carried out and the results are presented in this paper. There are a number of factors, of which increased muscular effort is one, which appear to contribute to the development of vitamin B, deficiency in man [Yang & Huang, 1934].

The Bisulphite Binding Power of the Blood in Health and in Disease, with Special Reference to Vitamin B(1) Deficiency.

There is increasing evidence that the biological function of vitamin B1 is concerned with oxidative processes in the living organism. In studies of oxygen utilization by manometric methods, Peters and his coworkers (1, 2) have shown that there is increased oxygen uptake by deficient brain and kidney tissues in vitro following the addition of vitamin B1. In the same laboratory Thompson and Johns...

Lxxx. Blood Pyruvate in Vitamin B1 Deficiency

IN the course of recent work on the role of vitamin B, in the metabolism of brain, it was discovered [Peters and Sinclair, 1933] that lactate solutions in which avitaminous pigeon's brain cells had respired for 2 hours gave a positive nitroprusside reaction for pyruvic acid [Simon and Piaux, 1924]. This led to a quantitative investigation of the formation of pyruvic acid during the respiration ...

The relationship of the blood pyruvic acid level to deficiency states in infancy and childhood.

Thiamin, acting in the form of its phosphoric ester co-carboxylase, is an enzyme necessary for the complete metabolism of glucose. In its absence glucose is broken down as far as pyruvic acid, which then accumulates until vitamin B1 is supplied. Peters and Thompson (1934) and Peters (1936) demonstrated that the respiration of avitaminotic pigeon brain was reduced as compared with that of normal...

Carbohydrate Metabolism in Thiamine Deficiency*

The relationship of vitamin Br to carbohydrate metabolism was one of the earliest functions of a vitamin to be observed. The problem has been more or less continuously investigated up to the present time and the majority of the evidence indicates that in vitamin B1 deficiency there is some interference with glycogen storage, hyperglycemia, and characteristic errors in carbohydrate metabolism. E...
